A decade ago, the thought of Chery being included on a list for top 10 passenger automakers in South Africa would have raised some eyebrows but the rebirthed Chinese brand managed this feat for the first time in July of 2022.
Courtesy of 1 262 vehicle sales during the month, Chery South Africa claimed eighth place in the passenger vehicle segment locally and thirteenth overall. These numbers in detail are as follows:
- Chery Tiggo 4 Pro – 689
- Chery Tiggo 7 Pro – 372
- Chery Tiggo 8 Pro – 201
According to the sales, the automaker reports that the Tiggo 7 Pro and the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro rank first in both of their respective segments based on the July 2022 sales charts provided by naamsa. Despite the dotted history of the brand in our local market, this is a truly impressive feat considering they officially reentered with the Tiggo 4 Pro in November last year.

“Chery’s sales performance is a tribute to our dealer network, which has been our greatest ambassador and which has been exemplary in its treatment of our Chery customers,” says Jay Jay Botes, National Sales Manager of Chery South Africa.
Since then, the Chinese manufacturer has been adding to their portfolio, with the Tiggo 8 Pro in February and the Tiggo 7 Pro in May. As the conclusive lineup of SUVs has been pandering to the versatile needs of South African buyers, the brand has also been increasing their footprint throughout South Africa with 60 existing dealers with short term plans to expand into neighbouring countries in Africa.
Botes further adds: “We realise that South Africans are under significant economic pressure and that they need the best possible value for money when buying a vehicle. That is why we have put so much effort into creating our 1-million-kilometre mechanical warranty and our best-in-class list of luxury and safety specifications in every Tiggo Pro.”
