The winners in each of the six categories of the 2019 World Car Awards have been announced at the New York International Auto Show.
So, which model took the overall title as the 2019 World Car of the Year? Well, that honour went the Jaguar I-Pace, which held off fellow finalists the Audi E-tron and Volvo S60/V60 for the win, assuming the mantle from 2018 winner, the Volvo XC60. Of course, in March 2019, the all-electric Jaguar also won the European Car of the Year award.
But that’s not all. The World Car Design of the Year gong also went to the I-Pace, which held off competition from the Suzuki Jimny and Volvo XC40. Does it stop there for the Coventry-based firm? Nope, the British automaker’s all-electric crossover also grabbed the World Green Car award, beating the Audi E-tron and Hyundai Nexo.
And the World Performance Car title? Well, the McLaren 720S blasted its way to that award ahead of the Aston Martin Vantage and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé. The Audi A7, meanwhile, triumphed over the Audi Q8 and BMW 8 Series in the World Luxury Car category.
Finally, the World Urban Car award went to the Suzuki Jimny, which held off the Hyundai Atos/Santro and Kia Soul.
Ralf Speth, chief executive officer at Jaguar Land Rover, said it was "an honour that the Jaguar I-Pace has received such an accolade from the prestigious World Car jurors".
“We started with an ideal, to move towards our ‘Destination Zero’ vision; zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion. I-Pace is our first step to achieving this, and it was conceived when EVs were little more than a niche choice," Speth said.
“So we started from a clean sheet of paper to create a new benchmark – the world's best premium electric vehicle, and a true Jaguar driver's car. For I-Pace to be awarded 2019 World Car of the Year gives our first all-electric vehicle the ultimate recognition it deserves. I would like to thank the team who have created I-Pace for their passion in making it so outstanding.”
