Volkswagen’s commercial vehicles division has released global sales figures – including those for its Amarok bakkie – for what was a tough 2020.
The Wolfsburg-based brand’s commercial division says the “economic downturns and social restrictions” associated with the COVID-19 pandemic saw its sales total fall some 24,4 percent to about 371 700 units in 2020.
Around 52 100 examples of the Amarok were sold globally in 2020, representing a year-on-year decline of some 28,1 percent. Production of the bakkie at the Hannover plant ended towards the middle of the year, although the Argentina factory is still building the Amarok.
What about Amarok sales in South Africa? Well, while we’re missing some mid-year data thanks to Naamsa’s decision to no longer release individual model sales, our figures suggest an average of around 135 units were sold locally each month in 2020.
As a reminder, the next-gen Amarok will be produced alongside the next Ranger at Ford’s assembly plant in Silverton, South Africa, from 2022.
VW’s commercial division also said the strongest individual market in Africa for 2020 was again South Africa, with about 4 300 (including other commercial models) units registered.
Globally, the T-series proved the best-selling VW commercial vehicle for the year, ending on around 145 000 units (down 24,7 percent). Next was the Caddy (112 000 units; down 27,3 percent), which switched to a new generation during 2020, followed by the Crafter (61 700 units; down 13,0 percent).
