The FIA Formula E Championship had just concluded, but already plans and schedules are being made for season 2, which is set to start later this year. And the legendary Italian circuit of Imola put in a bid to host a race in the upcoming championship.
Imola is known as one of the most revered and feared race tracks in the world. This is because it is the very same track where the legendary Ayrton Senna lost his life in 1994. After numerous changes have been made to the track in attempts to improve safety, Imola was removed from the Formula One calendar in the early parts of the new millennium.
Now, after more than a decade of “lying low”, Imola is back and ready to host an FIA event. And what better way to get back in the fray by hosting an event of the increasingly popular all-electric single-seater series.
All Formula E racetracks need to be less than three kilometres long and pictured is a layout of what the people of Imola have in mind.
The 2,8 km version turns left beore Tamburello and internal roads will be used until the Acqua Mineralli, before rejoining the former Grand Prix track.
Imola is one of a number of venues who have approached Formula E to host a race, but Imola is the only venue to make use of a race track. Other venues, including the current venues, are cities staging events on their streets.
