For many, the McLaren 675 LT is considered to be a masterpiece in both Coupe and Spider form which is why it should be no surprise that the new 720S will also benefit from this variant.
Company CEO Mike Flewitt told Car and Driver that the success of the 675LT makes the decision a no-brainer. This could also be partly motivated by the hype that the Lamborghini Huracán Perfomante has been setting ever since its Nürburgring laptime was uploaded. McLaren would be very keen on besting its impressive time.
“I was delighted from a market perspective, but also internally because we love that car. We have a huge enthusiasm for it. We’ll certainly repeat Long Tail, and now that the LT brand is established, if we announce an LT derivative of a car, then everyone will know what to expect: that it will be lighter, the chassis dynamics will be way sharper, and it will have more power. We’ll definitely repeat that in models going forward.” Flewitt told the American publication.
Flewitt also noted that there was a potential for a faster 570S derivative but this model would most likely not sport the LT badge. The long tail is a trim first found on the 1997 McLaren F1 GTR.
