Mercedes-Benz has just given the public a scope into its new wireless charging system for the S500e plug-in hybrid.
This will be an innovative solution for automobile charging despite having it having been readily available in modern smartphones for some time now. The goal for implementing this solution is to provide more convenience for the electrically influenced driving community.
The project of wireless charging kicked off just last year with a test fleet consisting of S500e models. Mercedes-Benz claims that the technology will be ready by next year and implemented in the facelifted S-Class. It will be provided as an optional extra that will not replace but rather accompany the wired charging system.
The wireless charging consists of two separate components. The first is a secondary coil in the vehicle floor and the second a base plate with integrated primary coil. With the base plate being placed in a secure location of the carport, all the driver will have to do is park over it and let the charging take place. This charging process has a maximum output of 3,6 kW and will be constantly monitored by the car’s system.
Mercedes-Benz isĀ also investigatingĀ combined charging systems with other manufacturers in an attempt to broaden the range of e-mobility vehicles.
