Speaking to American media at the German brand’s 140 Festival, company CEO has confirmed that the mini Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon won’t be targeting its existing G-Class customer base…

The mini Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has been in the German brand’s product pipeline since rumours of its existence first circulated in 2023. Since then, it has been stirring up a lot of interest and attention from audiences. The idea of a smaller entry-level G-Class is an appealing concept to consumers, considering the new G400d range starts at R3 462 812. Speaking to America’s Road and Track at the brand’s 140 Festival, Mercedes-AMG CEO Stefan Weckbach confirmed that the upcoming compact off-roading model will be a unique proposition that won’t eclipse the main G-Wagon model line.
“We will make sure that the little G-Class will target a different segment,” Weckbach said. “It will be significantly different from the big brother or mother or father. It won’t target the real G customer.”
While acknowledging a different target audience, Weckbach also confirmed that the upcoming mini Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon will inherit some of the core design principles of the flagship off-roading SUV. In essence, audiences can expect these two products to share similar DNA, while maintaining a distinctive role within the brand’s catalogue.
The mini Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is shaping up to be a true off-roader
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius added information that paints a picture of what we can expect from the mini Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon’s athletic capabilities. He described experiencing a test unit’s descent down the Schöckl mountain at around 70 km/h. “I’m not kidding. There’s only one car in the world that can do that, and that’s the G,” Källenius said. “That’s why it’s so unique.”

Källenius adds, “The Little G will have very good off-road capability.” Furthermore, the German company already has a broad powertrain plan. At a separate event hosted by Mercedes-Benz in May, former AMG CEO Michael Schiebe confirmed that the smaller G-wagon would be available with both internal combustion and electric options. A report by Bloomberg indicates that Källenius confirmed the highly anticipated upcoming off-roading SUV will hit the global market in less than two years from now.
