New vehicle sales in South Africa are under increased pressure, with total volumes falling some 10,1% to 48 745 units in October 2016 year-on-year.
Still, it’s interesting to take a look at what’s happening in terms of individual model sales. So, we’ve examined the figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), and picked out the ten best-selling passenger vehicles for the month (also, check out the 10 best-selling bakkies here).
One must bear in mind that certain importers – such as Hyundai and Kia – do not submit individual model sales figures, instead only disclosing aggregate sales stats. Mercedes-Benz, too, has taken a similar stance.
In October 2016, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo stayed on top, with the regular Polo again claiming second. Toyota’s combination of the Corolla, Auris and Corolla Quest (the brand reports an overall figure rather than individual model sales) held steady in third.
The Ford Fiesta again impressed by grabbing fourth (with its highest monthly total ever), while the Toyota Etios moved up two spots to fifth. The Toyota Fortuner therefore dropped one place to sixth, while the Ford EcoSport also fell one, to seventh.
The Toyota Avanza climbed a single spot to eighth, while the Renault Sandero fell one to ninth. The Nissan X-Trail, meanwhile, made a rare appearance to round out the list, with the BMW 3 Series (406) falling out of the top ten.
More odds and ends
Other interesting snippets from October’s stats include the fact Volkswagen sold 496 units of its new Tiguan, putting it ahead of the Toyota RAV4 (375). The Jeep Renegade (105) broke into three figures, while Ford sold 409 Focus units, making the C-segment contender more popular than the Figo (304).
The Blue Oval furthermore managed to move 124 units of its Everest, a figure that will no doubt increase substantially over the coming months thanks to the recent expansion of the range to include 2,2 TDCi derivatives.
The best-selling model in the General Motors range was again the Chevrolet Spark, which managed 251 units (the Trailblazer was next in line, with 140). Honda’s new BR-V made a strong start to life in South Africa, with 267 units moved in October.
Mazda’s top performer was the CX-5 (313), while the Datsun GO (340) and Go+ (170) led the charge for the Nissan Group, behind the aforementioned X-Trail. Porsche (83) again outsold Peugeot-Citroën (79) and Subaru (70), while the Clio (347), Captur (241) and Kadjar (105) all performed well for Renault. Interestingly, Duster sales fell to 89 units.
The Swift (169) was again Suzuki’s best-seller, while the A3 (302) claimed that title for Audi. Toyota sold 216 Aygo units, putting it ahead of the Volkswagen Up! (146).
