For only $350K, 12 owners of the exclusive gullwinged-doored Mercedes-Benz can convert theirs into a SLR HDK, otherwise known as a 722 GT replica courtesy of McLaren Special Operations.
This isn’t a tuning company with limited credibility completing the work but rather McLaren themselves. Making only 2 100 of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren two decades ago, some very special editions emerged. This included a Sir Stirling Moss model, which was adorned in his Mercedes racing number and aptly named the 722 Edition. Thereafter, a 722 GT came along and this was a stripped down, bare-bones, fast-focused model limited to only 21 units.

Now, 12 owners of the SLR model can take theirs to McLaren Special Operations for a conversion into a legitimate 722 GT replica. The catch is it costs $350 000, or around R6 million. For this sizable sum of money, buyers of the SLR HDK will get all of the aero upgrades that made the 722 GT distinguishable with the same mechanical tweaks under the surface to make it reflect the same performance as its looks. This time around, the thousands of dollars worth of outlay won’t remove any of the interior luxury.
That doesn’t mean it won’t get a refresh since MSO will update the SLR HDK interior with fresh trimmings. Under the bonnet, the 5,4-litre supercharged V8 will be given a throaty new exhaust system that will come with a bypass valve while a handling package includes suspension upgrades and new steering.
