South Africa’s 10 best-selling bakkies in the first half of 2019…

Now that the first six months of 2019 have come and gone, we’ve whipped out our trusty calculator to determine the 10 best-selling bakkies in South Africa in the first half of the year.

If you’ve been following our monthly lists, it’ll come as no surprise to you the locally built Toyota Hilux sits at the very top, with nearly 21 000 units sold in just six months. That’s an average of around 3 500 examples a month, with the Japanese bakkie’s best-ever sales performance coming in June (beating an eight-year-old record with 4 770 units registered).

Next up is the Ford Ranger, which is produced at the Blue Oval brand’s Silverton facility in Pretoria. Some 12 785 examples have been sold in the first half of 2019, which puts the Ford 8 133 units behind the Hilux at the halfway point of the year.

The (likewise locally built) Nissan NP200 – which has the half-tonne segment all to itself these days – places third, some 1 363 units ahead of the fourth-place Isuzu KB/D-Max (which is built in Port Elizabeth).

The Rosslyn-produced NP300/Hardbody finds itself in fifth, with the Volkswagen Amarok claiming sixth spot, a mere 12 units ahead of the Mahindra Pik-Up in seventh. Toyota’s Land Cruiser Pick-up is eighth and GWM’s Steed ninth, while the Nissan Navara has to settle for the final spot on the list as the only bakkie that didn’t crack at least four figures.

Wondering where the Mercedes-Benz X-Class fits in to all of this? Well, although the local arm of the German firm doesn’t report individual model sales figures to Naamsa, we asked Benz’s commercial division to provide the numbers. For the record, we’ve not yet heard back.
