The sales figures for July 2019 are in … and 779 units separate the top two vehicles as the battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues.
According to Naamsa, July 2019’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 46 077 units, representing a fall of 3,7 percent, year on year. The light commercial segment (13 852 units), meanwhile, showed a gain of 2,9 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018 (be sure to check out our list of the best-selling passenger vehicles and the worst-selling ones, too). So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the seventh month of 2019?
Well, the Toyota Hilux – bolstered by the arrival of the GR-Sport and Legend 50 derivatives – remained at the very top of the table, with the updated Ford Ranger (including the flagship Raptor) again having to settle for second place (after the first seven months of 2019, the Japanese bakkie finds itself a full 8 912 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival).

Meanwhile, the Nissan NP200 remained in third, with the Isuzu D-Max – having late in 2018 switched from the KB badge – just seven units behind in fourth (its final figure comprised 1 692 units of the D-Max and 31 units of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody held steady in fifth.
The Mahindra Pik-Up remained in sixth, while the Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up climbed two to seventh. The Volkswagen Amarok thus fell one spot to eighth, with the GWM Steed likewise dropping a place, to ninth. The Nissan Navara again grabbed the final spot on the list.
That means there was no room for the Mahindra Bolero (48), Mitsubishi Triton (33), Mazda BT-50 (26) or Fiat Fullback (7) in July 2019. Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month.
