The sales figures for October 2019 are in ... and a whopping 2 571 units separate the top two vehicles on our list of South Africa’s best-selling bakkies.

According to Naamsa, October’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 51 978 units, representing an increase of 0,2 percent compared to the corresponding month in 2018. The light commercial segment (13 366 units), meanwhile, showed a decline of 5,9 percent compared with October 2018. So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the tenth month of 2019?

Well, the Toyota Hilux stayed at the top of the table, more than 2 500 units ahead of the Ford Ranger, which again had to settle for second place (after the first ten months of the year, the Hilux finds itself an unassailable 13 842 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival).

The Isuzu D-Max – having late in 2018 switched from the KB badge – moved up one to third (its final figure comprised 1 372 units of the D-Max and 12 units of the KB). The Nissan NP200, meanwhile, dropped one spot to fourth, just about staying in four figures.

The Nissan NP300/Hardbody, Mahindra Pik-Up and Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up remained in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, while the Volkswagen Amarok moved up one to eighth. GWM’s Steed fell a single spot to ninth, while the Nissan Navara again grabbed the final spot on the list.

That means there was no room for the Mahindra Bolero (67), Mitsubishi Triton (32), Mazda BT-50 (13) or Fiat Fullback (five) on the list in October 2019. As a reminder, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month.
