As of March 2023, the South African new-vehicle market saw a slight year-on-year decrease in sales, with 50 157 units sold. However, the light-commercial segment, which is dominated by bakkies, experienced an 11,1% growth, reaching an impressive 15 529 units sold. The Toyota Hilux maintained its position as the top-selling bakkie while the Isuzu D-Max fended the all-new Ford Ranger off to clinch second. The final two spots were occupied by the Nissan NP-200 and Mahindra Pik Up.

According to Naamsa, despite the challenges faced by the new vehicle sales and exports came in the form of the National Shutdown which saw many dealers closing their doors and vehicle manufacturers in hotspot metros halting production, the bakkie market in South Africa remained strong.
The popularity of these vehicles among consumers can be attributed to their versatility and durability, making them ideal for both commercial and personal use.
