Suzuki South Africa says it smashed its previous monthly local sales record, with 1 577 new vehicles registered across the country in July 2019.

As we pointed out in our list of South Africa’s best-selling passenger vehicles, the Swift was the driving force behind the achievement, selling 635 units and earning itself a place in the top ten.

Suzuki SA’s final figure of 1 577 units is 6,6 percent up on its previous sales record of 1 479 units, set in June, and some 23,9 percent up year-on-year.

According to Naamsa's figures, this performance sees Suzuki SA move up to ninth position for July (and grow its share to 3,4 percent of the overall market and 5,03 percent of the passenger vehicle market), ahead of the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Mazda.

“Suzuki has been following a very optimistic strategy,” said André Venter, divisional manager of sales and marketing at Suzuki Auto South Africa.

“As the market has shrunk, we invested in new dealers and new products, with the firm belief that people tend to recognise and choose good value for money products when money is tight.”

“In August, our dealers will also take delivery of the first Swift Sport and Vitara Turbo models. We know that there is a large pent-up demand for these turbocharged models and look forward to handing over the keys to customers who have been patiently waiting for them,” added Venter.

So, besides the Swift, which other vehicles performed well for Suzuki in July? Well, the Celerio (255), Ignis (164), Ertiga (127) and Baleno (101) all enjoyed solid months, while the Jimny added 81 units, the Vitara a further 59, the DZire another 41 and the Ciaz some 20 more.

Only the ageing Grand Vitara failed to hit double figures (and thus found itself on our list of worst-selling passenger vehicles). In addition, Suzuki SA sold 93 commercial vehicles.
