The new passenger car market in July 2024 registered 29 934 units, an increase of 1 894 cars, or 6.8%, compared to 28 040 new cars sold in July 2023. Car rental sales made up 17.1% of new passenger vehicle sales for the month. Despite the overall positive response from the new vehicle market in July 2024, aggregate new vehicle sales for the year to date remain 6.3% below the corresponding period in 2023. OEMs and importers continue to introduce new products, facing challenges and economic uncertainties. Encouraging factors for growth and increased consumer spending for the rest of the year include four consecutive months without load shedding, a stronger Rand exchange rate, and the potential for up to two interest rate cuts before year-end. The ABSA Purchasing Managers’ Index, which tracks expected business conditions in six months, increased to 69.4 points in July 2024 from 68.1 in June 2024, reflecting the most optimism since early 2022.
