It was Toyota who held the top spot of total vehicle sales in July 2022 with a tally of 7 110 units sold while the rest of the new car market reflects an upward trajectory in comparison to the same time last year.

An upwards trajectory for almost all local segments
The aggregate domestic new vehicle sales reflected a total of 43 593 sales, 7 173 more than the same time in 2021 or a 30,9% improvement. As South Africa has unshackled itself from restrictions and lockdowns, export sales have also increased a staggering 177,7% from the year before with 31 242 units sold. For context, only 11 252 vehicles were exported from our shores in July 2021.

On the new passenger car market, 31 455 new vehicles were registered which signifies an increase of 10 517 units, or 50,2%. The car rental industry was also instrumental in this number accounting for 13,2% of new car sales in July 2022. The only market not to grow when compared to the same time in the previous fiscal year was that of the new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini-buses which declined 6,9%. Honourable mentions include both Chery Auto South Africa and Haval Motors SA who managed 1 262 and 1 502 respectively. On the opulent end of the spectrum, luxury brands also managed some respectable numbers. Leading the sales charts as always was Porsche with a tally of 115 new vehicles sold, while subsidiaries Bentley and Lamborghini South Africa managed 6 and 4 units respectively. Scuderia South Africa matched their Italian counterpart with 4 listed sales.
