Volkswagen Group South Africa says it has now produced 200 000 units of its sixth-generation Polo hatchback for export.
The new comes after the Uitenhage plant built its 200 000th Polo in total (so, including the local market and export) in September 2019.
This latest milestone brings the total number of units manufactured for export since 1994 to 1 098 960.
The Uitenhage plant has been building the current Polo hatchback (including the flagship GTI) since September 2017, exporting to right-hand-drive markets and furthermore supplementing production of left-hand-drive units for certain European markets.
In 2019, VW SA manufactured a total of 161 954 vehicles, surpassing its previous record (achieved in 2011) of 137 758 vehicles.
“As a company we had many reasons to be proud in 2019, and this milestone sets the tone for another strong year ahead,” said Thomas Schaefer, Volkswagen Group South Africa chairman and managing director.
“We intend to build on our strong performance in 2020, both in the local and export markets, and we remain committed to delivering excellence to all our customers and the larger community.”
In October 2019, the firm registered a new record for the number of vehicles produced at its plant in a single month, churning out 16 453 units (comprising Polo and Polo Vivo hatchbacks).
