Volkswagen Group South Africa says it smashed its production record at its Uitenhage plant in 2019.

In a statement, the local arm of the German firm said it manufactured 161 954 vehicles in 2019, beating the previous high of 137 758 vehicles achieved in 2011.

Of the 161 954 vehicles built locally in 2019, VW SA says 108 422 were built for export and 53 532 for the South African market. The production volume comprised 131 365 Polo units (including the GTI) and 30 589 Polo Vivo units.

In October 2019, VW SA hit a new monthly production record, building 16 453 vehicles in the month (besting the previous record set in October 2009, when the plant manufactured 15 131 units in one month).

“The production volume we achieved in 2019 is an important milestone for VW SA,” said Thomas Schaefer, Volkswagen Group South Africa chairman and managing director.

“This achievement is testament to the efficiency, commitment and excellence of our employees. I am grateful to every contribution they made in 2019 to reach this impressive number, and I look forward to more successes in the year ahead.”
