Volkswagen signs contract with Ford for Amarok successor

Yes, it’s official. Volkswagen says it has signed a contract with Ford for the Blue Oval brand to develop a successor for the Amarok bakkie.

Back in January 2019, the two firms announced the first “formal agreements in a broad alliance” that would include the US brand engineering and building “medium-sized” bakkies “for both companies”.

In a fresh statement, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles said its “collaboration” with new alliance partner Ford would “reinforce” its competitive position in the market, adding the two manufacturers “complement one another in their regional strengths and products”.

“Initial contracts have been signed – including a ‘development contract, pickup’ for the successor model of the Amarok,” the Wolfsburg-based automaker said.

This confirms the Amarok’s successor will indeed be based on the next-generation Ranger. The initial joint statement from the two brands indicated the first bakkies built under the alliance would hit the market “as early as 2022”.

Earlier in March 2019, the head of Volkswagen said he was “really impressed” with the platform that would underpin the next-generation Amarok and Ford Ranger.
