The current-generation Volkswagen Jetta GLI was recently given a facelift for the North American market which signified the brand’s commitment to its performance sedan. While discontinued in South Africa due to lack of demand, the American arm noted that this product was still massively popular.
This update is just part of a 37-year long heritage that that starts with the second-generation model. The first Volkswagen Jetta GLI was introduced to the market in 1984 as a sedan alternative to the Golf GTI for consumers wanting a bit more space.
This model was fitted with a fuel injected 1,8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that delivered 67 kW to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. Dynamics were improved via a specially tuned sports suspension. By 1990, this model was provided with a 16-valve 2,0-litre four-cylinder unit to maintain its edge in the segment.
Things started to get serious for the Volkswagen Jetta GLI when the Mk4 model was fitted with the now famous naturally aspirated 2,8-litre VR6 unit. Two years later, a more efficient turbocharged 1,8-litre engine was made optionally available.
By the fifth-generation, the Volkswagen Jetta GLI adopted the turbopetrol 2,0-litre four-cylinder TSI unit that delivered 147 kW. It also introduced an independent rear suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels. One generation after this, not much was changed mechanically but a fully independent rear suspension, updated interior and bigger wheels worked together to create a more conclusive package.
The current generation Volkswagen Jetta GLI was introduced just last year with the brand’s EA888 mill with a power output of 167 kW. While the dual-clutch transmission remained a popular choice, the North American division notes a strong demand for the six-speed manual gearbox. Dynamics of the performance sedan were accentuated by an electronic front differential.
Updates included in the model that will be introduced to dealerships next year consist of some visual revisions both inside and out and more standard kit within the cabin.
