Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) is taking significant steps towards sustainability by reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy. This initiative aims to mitigate the environmental impact of fossil fuels and ensure a stable power supply amid frequent outages.

The company is rapidly expanding its electric vehicle lineup, including new models such as the ID.4 and ID. Buzz. VWGA’s efforts are part of a broader commitment to achieve carbon neutrality in vehicle and component production by 2030 through its Zero Impact Factory initiatives.
One major investment is in the Kariega manufacturing plant, where VWGA has committed up to R100 million towards renewable energy. By the end of this year, the plant will be powered by a total of 5.6 MWp of solar energy. This includes 3 MWp of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels currently being installed in the employee car park, expected to be operational by September 2024. These new panels will add to the existing 2.6 MWp of rooftop PV panels in the vehicle assembly plant and the 163 kWp system at the component manufacturing plant.

Volkswagen is also developing an extensive EV charging network to support its shift towards electric vehicles. Investment in EV battery technology is another key focus, underscoring the company’s broader commitment to reducing carbon emissions throughout its supply chain and manufacturing processes. Ulrich Schwabe, VW Production Director, stressed the urgency of these measures. “Our plan to become a Zero Impact Factory by 2030 aligns with our global Group Strategy Way to Zero. We all witness the effects of climate change and its impact on biodiversity. Our commitment to carbon neutrality reflects the urgency for immediate action,” Schwabe said.
According to the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, manufacturing in Nelson Mandela Bay, where VWGA is headquartered, consumes at least 55% of the area’s electricity. This underscores the critical role of renewable energy as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
