Wait, what? Mercedes-Benz X-Class to be discontinued, report suggests

A fresh report from Europe suggests the Mercedes-Benz X-Class bakkie could be the first of the Three-pointed Star’s models to be scrapped as Daimler aims to cut costs.

According to Automotive News, sources at the Stuttgart-based automaker say the premium pick-up is to be discontinued to “reduce costs amid profit warnings”. Only 16 700 units of the Nissan Navara-based pick-up were sold last year in Europe, Australia and South Africa combined, sources say.

The exact number of X-Class units sold locally, however, remains unknown, as the local arm of the German carmaker does not report individual sales figures.

Automotive News’ sources continued, saying sales of the X-Class are “way below the expectations” and do not “generate enough income for the manufacturer”. Furthermore, the sources said that although nothing was confirmed yet, “uncertainty surrounding the Renault-Nissan Alliance partnership with Daimler could also play a role in the final decision”.
