Each being in South Africa for several years now, Chinese automakers Haval and Chery have won local buyers over with their affordability and value for money. We take a look at the data from July to see who is winning the sales race.

When it comes to value for money, Chinese automakers seem to tick that box best in the new car market. Flooding the roads with a fleet of SUVs, Haval and Chery have emerged as two automakers from the Far East that have satisfied the needs of buyers, with continually increasing market share and range updates to retain relevance in the cutthroat segment. Here is a direct look at how well each of their lineups has sold in South Africa over the past month, stacked up against each other.

In the midsize crossover SUV segment are the Haval H6 and the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro. Owing to a more diverse lineup, including a hybrid and sportier derivatives, Haval draws first blood with their H6 which sold almost double that of its Chinese compatriot. Despite this, Chery has just implemented some mild changes onto their flagship SUV which now tethers on R700 000 fully specced.

Looking further down the list at each firm’s sales stalwart for the South African market are the Jolion and Tiggo 4 Pro compact crossover SUVs. Haval once again achieves victory here with the Jolion, albeit at a closer margin. Under Chery’s portfolio are also sub-brands Omoda and Jaecoo although no sales figures for these new entrants are listed.

Over and above the models listed above in the Chinese sales race, there are also several that aren’t in direct competition with each other. Here is how many have sold below with models including the Tiggo 7 Pro middle child, splitting Chery’s SUV sales, alongside Haval’s light commercial vehicle division, GWM, and their fleet of bakkies.
