Peugeot has released a statement confirming the development of a “new range of electrified sports vehicles” from 2020.
The French automaker said it would “concentrate its resources on developing these new vehicles” and had therefore decided to withdraw from the WRX championship at the end of the 2018 season.
Peugeot promised its range of “high-performance, low-emission electrified sports vehicles” would be developed in collaboration with Peugeot Sport teams and would “contribute to the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions”.
“Driving pleasure is at the heart of the brand’s history. Electrification is a new opportunity to offer new high-performance versions to our customers looking for low-emission sports sensation,” said Peugeot CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato.
“Driving sensations will be amplified by the performance provided by electrification. New territories to be explored, new challenges to be met, the adventure of the Peugeot brand continues for an exciting future. Boredom will never be part of our DNA,” he added.
Pictured above is the Peugeot 308 R HYbrid concept first shown at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2015. It featured a 1,6-litre petrol engine from the GTi developing 201 kW, along with two electric motors. The total system output was an astonishing 371 kW and 729 N.m. of torque.
