A recent television commercial provided a teaser of the upcoming Tasman in an iconic Australian setting, featuring a lineup of 20 sports figures. This strategic teaser underscores Kia’s intent to capture the attention of the Australian market, renowned for its affinity towards versatile and robust vehicles, similar to South Africa.
Named after either Tasmania or the Tasman Sea, the Tasman is set to contend with established players like the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max. Although intricate details regarding the bakkie were not divulged in the teaser, clandestine snapshots of the prototype suggest a design ethos reminiscent of Kia’s current SUV lineup, including the EV5 and EV9, accentuated by a loading bay.

All powertrain and capability details on the bakkie remain well under wraps but we do know that Kia has intended to distinguish the Tasman with its forward-looking design language, in harmony with the South Korean automaker’s latest aesthetic trajectory. This futuristic visage not only underscores Kia’s commitment to innovation but also positions Tasman to carve out its unique space in the market, appealing to consumers in search of a fusion of modern style and pragmatic functionality.
While anticipation mounts for the Tasman’s imminent release in the Land Down Under, crucial details such as pricing, specifications, and local market availability have not been confirmed by Kia’s South African division. Considering both countries subscribe to right-hand drive-produced vehicles and both are avid supporters of light commercial vehicles, likely, the Tasman will eventually arrive on local shores.
