Cape Town has introduced its first professional-grade skidpan facility, which intends to provide drivers with hands-on experience in vehicle control under low-grip conditions. Developed by driver training company MasterDrive, the facility addresses a critical gap in South Africa’s advanced driver education infrastructure.
The controlled environment enables drivers to safely practice essential techniques such as emergency braking and skid recovery—skills that can be challenging or hazardous to develop on public roads. With South Africa facing persistently high road fatality rates, proponents of advanced training believe the new facility could equip drivers to navigate dangerous situations better.
Eugene Herbert, CEO of MasterDrive, highlights the value of the skidpan in offering realistic training without risk. “Traditional methods don’t always replicate the conditions that lead to loss of control,” he explains. “This facility allows drivers to experience and respond to critical scenarios safely.”
Although the skidpan will serve MasterDrive’s own training programs, it will not be restricted to the company. The facility is open to other accredited trainers, social car clubs, and organisations focused on community development. MasterDrive’s coastal GM, Eugene Nourse, emphasises the importance of broader access in fostering a culture of safer driving, not only among everyday motorists but also within car enthusiast circles and under-resourced communities.

The introduction of the skidpan marks a significant step toward expanding advanced driver training in South Africa. It also presents opportunities for professional drivers, including those in fleet and delivery services, to refine their skills in high-pressure environments.
