A fresh report out of the United States suggests Lamborghini has considered the “feasibility” of building a true off-roader that would effectively serve as a long-awaited successor to the LM002.
Motor Trend sat down with Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali, who told the publication the Italian firm had studied the feasibility of creating a hardcore off-roader.
Of course, the Urus was unveiled late in 2017, billed as a sort of spiritual successor to the LM200. Sharing its underpinnings with various Volkswagen Group cousins, however, the Urus is clearly a road-biased SUV (even with the optional off-road package specified).
While he refused to comment further, Domenicali did apparently add Lamborghini customers had approached the automaker looking to buy a classic LM002 (affectionately known as the “Rambo Lambo”), but since fewer than 350 units were ever built, examples were in short supply.
The idea of an off-roader from Sant’Agata Bolognese started as a project to develop a high-performance vehicle for military use towards the end of the 1970s, bearing the name “Cheetah”. Lamborghini engineer Giulio Alfieri resurrected the project in 1981 with the LM001, followed by the LMA prototype.
The final production model (badged LM002) was first presented at the Brussels Auto Show in 1986, employing a 5,2-litre V12 engine from the Countach Quattrovalvole.
