Which automotive brand better embraces the space-age theme than Lamborghini? Scissor doors akimbo, angular bodywork with deep crevices steeped on any faceted surface and a soundtrack that is out of this world, just like their Lamborghini Space Key…?
The famed Italian bull brand has entered the controversial NFT world with a carbon fibre ‘Space Key’ and no, despite their exclusivity and likely eye watering price tag, they won’t be able to actually take you into space.
It all started in a much simpler time; 2019, before COVID and when opulence was something that wasn’t as frowned upon as it may be today. Unlike the Tesla Roadster of Elon Musk that is gravitating in the depths of the universe, the Lamborghini Space Key was born out of a joint research project and is exactly that; an exclusive key. The five units of carbon fibre fulfilled many childrens dreams’ of entering space and spending time at the International Space station.
Although Lamborghini did not divulge any information on the research that was conducted in this costly experiment, what eventually came back from the baroness of space were five squares to which QR codes had been added and each linked to a non-fungible token. If you seem to have missed the craze on what an NFT is, think of them like a unique unit of data employing technology that allows digital content. Instead of opening the vertical doors to a very special version of the Raging Bull, they will give their buyers unique access to some special artwork.
While little information has been divulged at this stage on these few NFTs, their artwork and artists is known. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann stated that Lamborghini’s leading nature in the automotive composite material sector was enough justification to “set sail for new horizons.”
