Lexus all-new NX is here, introducing a new design, new powertrains, new connectivity and safety tech, as well as improved dynamics and performance.
Lexus claim that the second-generation NX is far more than just that, but rather the opening of a new chapter for the Lexus brand. Heralding in a new direction in design and powertrains, the mid-size luxury SUV represents a leap forward in dynamic performance for the brand. Additionally, a new multimedia platform which Lexus calls the Tazuna cockpit concept features in the second-generation NX. It comprises a 14-inch touch-display and in top-spec F Sport model features a high-grade digital instrument cluster and a colour head-up display, too.
Just two models are available at launch; the 2WD 152 kW, 239 N.m 2,5-litre naturally-aspirated EX model and the AWD 205 kW, 430 N.m turbocharged 2,4-litre F Sport. Hybrid models will join the lineup at a later stage.
An interesting bit of tech features on the new NX – safe exit assist (SEA). This system incorporates new e-latch electrically activated door handle which essentially detect cyclists or vehicles passing close to the vehicle and then keeps the door closed to avoid a collision. A full suite of assistance aids feature, too, with more three-lettered acronyms than one could ever imagine. All are aimed at keeping both occupants and pedestrians safe by way of a myriad warnings, bongs, flashing lights and steering assistance where applicable.
As standard, the NX 250 EX comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps with automatic high-beam assist, dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable and heated front seats, and the “human-centric Tazuna cockpit concept,” DAB+ digital radio, “Hey Lexus!” natural speech recognition and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The NX 350 F Sport adds 20-inch alloy wheels, tri-beam LED headlamps with an adaptive high-beam system, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic view monitor, panoramic sunroof and F Sport-exclusive styling elements. The NX F Sport features dark chrome exterior details and a unique F Sport design mesh grille, too, as well as new front and rear bumper designs with larger side vents cut into the front bumper. Two colours are exclusive to the F Sport models – White Nova and Poseidon Blue. As always with top-spec Lexus’, the 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system features, too.
Lexus South Africa said, “The all-new NX range will reset luxury medium SUV benchmarks with its brave design, exhilarating performance and imaginative technology.
“It combines luxury specification and famous Takumi craftsmanship with next-generation design and a level of technology that extends from active safety and security to infotainment and powertrains.”
