Ulterio Motiv, the new sister company of SVI Engineering, has launched its debut all-terrain models based on the Toyota Land Cruiser 79: a 6×4 and a 6×6, both built for rugged performance and versatility.

The standout among these is the 6×6 model, which significantly boosts the Land Cruiser’s capabilities. By adding a third rear axle, Ulterio Motiv increases the vehicle’s gross vehicle mass (GVM) to a formidable 6 050 kg, a hefty 2 850 kg more than the standard model. This extension involves expertly welding a new axle to the existing chassis, preserving the integrity of the original structure while enhancing load-bearing capacity.
The 6×6 also features upgraded rear axles and three differential locks, which contribute to its impressive off-road performance. The design simplifies the drive system compared to other 6×6 setups, using a straight-through differential drive and a slipper-type clutch that only engages the full 6×6 drive when necessary.
In terms of braking, the 6×6 model includes a hydraulic-assisted brake booster with braided hoses, providing improved braking ease over the standard Land Cruiser. This system is also available for retrofitting to existing 70-series Land Cruisers. However, due to its increased load-carrying capability, the 6×6 requires a code C1 driving licence (formerly code 10) for use on public roads.

The 6×4 version, while sharing the 6×6’s rugged look, differs in its axle setup. This model does not feature a powered rear axle, instead relying on its additional axle solely for load-carrying, with a GVM of 5 500 kg. The 6×4 model employs a bogey system to ensure that the driven axle bears 60% of the load for better traction. Both the 6×4 and 6×6 models come equipped with braking systems on the third axle to enhance safety.
Both variants are available with optional 35-inch steel wheels, which improve ground clearance and traction. The new axles are track-corrected, meaning they are slightly wider to align with the front tyres, further enhancing off-road performance. For those who already own a recent Land Cruiser 79, Ulterio Motiv offers conversion services to upgrade to either the 6×4 or 6×6 models. This service is available for six-cylinder, V8, and the latest four-cylinder automatic models.
Jaco de Kock, founder of Ulterio Motiv and CEO of SVI Engineering, explained the company’s vision: “We set out to offer unique automotive solutions that blend practicality with innovation. Our new 6×4 and 6×6 Land Cruisers are a testament to this goal, with more exciting products on the horizon.”
Wilhelm Lutjeharms, Ulterio Motiv’s public relations manager, highlighted the key benefits: “The Land Cruiser 79 6×6 represents the pinnacle of off-road and load-carrying capability. Meanwhile, the 6×4 model offers a cost-effective alternative that delivers similar functionality and style at a lower price.”
