With the facelift of the Volkswagen Golf 7 just around the corner (and billed as a “major update“), the German automaker has created a new video series entitled “evolution of an icon”.
We’ve already seen the first instalment featuring the Golf Mk1, which first hit dealerships way back in 1974. Now VW has released the second episode, which logically stars the second-generation Golf of 1983.
The Wolfsburg automaker says “the most defining moment in the history of the Golf came in the late ’70s when the decision was made to create the Golf MkII by further developing the Golf Mk1’s design DNA”.
Whereas the Mk1’s rear lights were positioned quite low, just above the bumper, they were moved much higher up on the second-generation Golf, a styling feature VW says “no other car had” back in 1983. Some design cues were carried over, though, including the C-pillar configuration that the German automaker says “remains typical to this very day”.
In the words of Volkswagen in 1983: “The Golf must remain a Golf. So no redesign should move away from the Golf concept – yet it should still be a new car from bumper to bumper, abiding by the fundamental principles: concept continuity, progress in detail and quality”.
