BMW enthusiasts in the U.S. have something special to look forward to: the 2024 BMW Z4 will now be equipped with a manual six-speed transmission, a nod to classic driving experiences. This feature will be exclusive to the more potent six-cylinder M40i variant of the roadster.

Crafted with the American market in mind, this manual transmission is a product of ZF, the same supplier behind the 6-speed manual found in the Toyota Supra, closely related to the Z4. However, BMW has fine-tuned this transmission specifically for the Z4, mirroring Toyota’s unique tuning for the Supra. Under the hood, the engine remains the formidable 3,0-litre turbocharged inline-six, boasting 281 kW of power and 500 N.m of torque. Power continues to be channelled solely to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential.
Opting for the manual means the Z4 M40i might sacrifice a touch of speed compared to its automatic counterpart. Yet, the trade-off in straight-line performance is a small price to pay for the heightened engagement that comes with the manual transmission.
The M Performance Z4 model showcases a staggered wheel setup, comprising 19-inch 255/35 front tyres and beefier 20-inch 285/30 rear tyres. These wheels not only contribute to an aggressive aesthetic but also aim to bolster rear traction. To further enhance performance, the car features an active differential, firmer anti-roll bars, and tweaked steering and adaptive damping systems.
The Z4 holds a storied history, and its ties with the Toyota Supra add an interesting layer. Both cars share roots and development, evident in their shared supplier for the manual transmission. However, BMW and Toyota have meticulously tailored their respective transmissions to suit the nuances of their vehicles.
For those who truly relish driving, the excitement of the manual transmission in the Z4, combined with its boosted performance, sets the stage for an exhilarating ride. As for when or if this specific model, equipped with its fresh 6-speed manual transmission, will ever make its way to our local shores—well, your guess is as good as mine. The current offering by BMW on the Z4 includes the sDrive20i M Sport coming in at R993 045 while the potent Z4 M40i will set buyers back R1 331 537.
