The Central Energy Fund (CEF) has announced that the retail prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin will all increase from Wednesday. While the higher international oil price has been a major contributing factor, the weakening rand has done no favours for motorists at the pumps for March. Across the country, all octanes of petrol will increase by R1.21 while 500 ppm diesel at wholesale will increase by R1.06 and 50 ppm diesel will increase by R1.19.
“While the weaker rand is contributing a small margin to the under-recovery and increase in prices expected, the overall picture looks bleak and consumers will feel the pinch,” said the Automobile Association.

With this in mind, the finance minister agreed to leave the fuel levies unchanged after they too were rumoured to be raised for the new financial year. This decision by the South African government is owed to any unnecessary further increases adding significant strain to the already cash-strapped South Africans. This now ranks the current price of petrol in South Africa as the third-highest in the country’s history, after it reached R26.31 per litre in July 2022 and R24.99 per litre in August 2022.
