Mercedes-AMG CLS53 and E53 (coupé and cabriolet) hit SA…

Mercedes-Benz South Africa has launched its new Mercedes-AMG CLS53 locally, along with coupé and cabriolet versions of the Mercedes-AMG E53.

While we already brought you local pricing for the CLS53 (for the record, it comes in at R1 491 600, before CO2 emissions tax), we can now also share pricing for the two new E-Class models.

The Mercedes-AMG E53 Coupé will start at R1 311 700 and the E53 Cabriolet at R1 430 600, before also before CO2 emissions tax, slotting in above the E53 Sedan.

Each of Affalterbach’s 53-badged model draws its urge from a 3,0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine boasting “twin forced induction” thanks to the combination of an exhaust-driven turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor (the latter sited between the engine and the nine-speed automatic transmission).

The six-pot delivers 320 kW and 520 N.m to all four wheels, while the so-called “EQ Boost” starter generator system temporarily adds 16 kW and 250 N.m to the mix, and also powers the 48-volt on-board electrical system.

In the case of the CLS53 4Matic+, that’s enough for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,5 seconds, a time matched by the E53 4Matic+ Cabriolet (the E53 4Matic+ Coupé is one-tenth quicker).

The new 53-badged models are visually set apart by their twin-blade radiator grilles (a trait previously reserved for the V8 models), front apron designs, AMG-specific side-sills, new rear aprons (with diffuser inserts) and round exhaust tailpipe trim elements in high-gloss chrome.
