A Mercedes-AMG driver has been arrested in Gauteng after being nabbed speeding at 222 km/h on the N1 in the direction of Bloemfontein.
According to Sowetan Live, the 30-year-old male driver was stopped by the Gauteng traffic police department’s high-speed unit, rollicking along at more than 100 km/h over the national limit.
“The man was caught travelling in a silver Mercedes-Benz GLE AMG and told officers he was rushing to Bloemfontein‚” the department said, according to the publication.
It’s not clear whether the man was driving the V6-powered Mercedes-AMG GLE43 or the V8-powered GLE63 (which was also offered in “S” guise).
“The speedster was arrested on the spot and taken to Vanderbijlpark police station‚ where he was formally charged.”
The man is facing charges of reckless and negligent driving as well as exceeding the general speed limit.
According to Sowetan Live, Gauteng community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane commented on the arrest and made a call for increased driver education.
“Driver behaviour on our roads is not at a desirable level and therefore this calls for the intensification of road safety education‚” Nkosi-Malonane said.
“The majority of road fatalities are as a result of excessive speeding‚ reckless and negligent driving‚ as well as driving under the influence of alcohol,” she added.
