Mercedes-AMG reveals (more practical) CLA45 S Shooting Brake

Mercedes-AMG has lifted the wraps off the new CLA45 Shooting Brake, which will slot in next to the automaker’s recently unveiled high-performance A45 hatchback and CLA45 sedan as the third model in its “Performance compact cars portfolio”.

“Our Shooting Brake additionally offers a pronounced degree of practical utility value, which its expressive design idiom brings across with plenty of lifestyle appeal,” Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, said.

According to Mercedes-AMG, 550 litres of luggage capacity can be accessed via the easy-to-open tailgate, which includes functionalities such as hands-free access. “The boot is large enough to accommodate a wealth of recreational and outdoor equipment,” Mercedes-AMG says. The tailgate opening measures 871 mm, which is significantly larger than the previous model’s 635 mm.

The Shooting Brake models make use of the same 2,0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol mill employed by its hatchback and coupé-styled sedan stablemates. In the standard model, the engine is tuned to produce 285 kW and 480 N.m, while the S-badged variants produce 310 kW and 500 N.m. Power is sent to all four corners via a 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.

Mercedes claims the CLA45 Shooting Brake will complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4,1 seconds, while the CLA45 S Shooting brake will reach the 100 km/h mark in 4,0 seconds. The latter tops out at an electronically limited speed of 270 km/h (20 km/h more than the CLA45 Shooting Brake).

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the Shooting Brake will ever reach South African shores, as the previous-generation version wasn’t offered here. The local arm of the German-based brand has, however, confirmed the flagship S variants of both the sedan and hatchback will be available locally.
