Just how successful has the W177-generation A-Class been for Mercedes-Benz? Well, the German firm has released global sales figures for the hatchback after its first full year on sale.
While the fourth-generation A-Class was revealed in February 2018, the Stuttgart-based automaker says “full availability” was reached only in May 2018 (in South Africa, meanwhile, the first units arrived only in August of that year).
So, how many have been sold so far? Well, Mercedes-Benz says “more than 195 000 units” of the current-generation A-Class have been registered worldwide “in the first year of full availability since its market launch in May 2018”. Unfortunately, since Mercedes-Benz SA doesn’t report individual model sales to Naamsa, we can’t tell you how many of those were sold locally.
Furthermore, sales of the firm’s compact cars increased for the third month in a row in May 2019, with more than 58 000 A-Class, B-Class, CLA, CLA Shooting Brake and GLA models sold during the month.
“The third month in a row with worldwide growth in sales of Mercedes-Benz compact cars demonstrates the strong demand for our new models,” said Britta Seeger, member of the board of management at Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars marketing and sales.
“We are very pleased with the excellent feedback, especially from our younger customers, on the launch of the new CLA Coupé in Europe, on the new A-Class and on our MBUX multimedia system,” she added.
This comes despite Mercedes-Benz’s global sales total falling 1,3 percent to 195 690 units in May 2019, and its overall year-to-date figure dropping 4,7 percent to 938 499 units.
