The Mercedes-Benz EQS has finally broken cover after being teased earlier this month. Daimler’s latest addition to its EQ range aims to be an electrified alternative to the current S-Class with it boasting a number of luxurious features.
The Mercedes-Benz EQS receives two power outputs at launch. These include the 450+ which uses a rear-wheel driven motor to produce 245 kW and 568 N.m of torque and a 580 4Matic which delivers 385 kW and 855 N.m to all-four wheels. Both derivatives source power from a 107,8 kWh battery will hit a top speed of 210 km/h but where acceleration is concerned, the 450+ will sprint from 0-100 km/h in 6,2 seconds while the 580 will do it in 4,3 seconds.
The 580 4Matic boasts the torque shift functionality which distributes drive torques between the front and rear axles for a more balanced driving experience. The EQS’s party trick however, is its rear-axle steering system which can turn up to an angle of 4,5 degrees which provides it with a turning circle of 11,9 metres. At an additional cost, you can increase the variance to 10 degrees which gives the large saloon a turning circle of 10,9 metres.
The EQS 580 will be able to travel up to 770 km before needing a recharge. 300 km worth of charge can be provided in 15 minutes through a DC fast charging system. Mercedes-Benz’s confidence in its battery is backed-up by a 10-year/250 000 km warranty that covers loss of capacity.
With the Mercedes-Benz EQS being an EV, a big focus has been placed on aerodynamics. Through purposeful design practices, the brand managed to bring the car’s drag coefficient down to 0,20 which sets a benchmark for production vehicles. Further improving on air resistance are the optimised 19, 20 and 21-inch wheels.
Overall, the new EQS measures 5 216 mm long, 1 926 mm wide and 1 512 mm tall. It’s quite heavy on the metal too, with kerb mass for the 450+ being 2 480 kg and the 580, 2 585 kg. As for boot space, Mercedes-Benz claims the EQS can carry 610 dm3 worth of luggage which can be extended to 1 770 dm3 when the seats are folded.
As it’s a direct sibling to the S-Class, the cabin of the Mercedes-Benz EQS has been designed with luxury in mind. While the space is futuristic, the brand has made sure to keep the atmosphere traditional and avant-garde through the materials and colours it offers. The brand’s MBUX Hyperscreen has been fitted to the dash and is surrounded by a thin silver frame.
