A fresh report out of Australia claims Mercedes-Benz executives refused to discuss the X-Class at the Frankfurt motor show, adding to speculation there are plans for the bakkie to be dropped from the automaker’s range.
According to motoring.com.au, Mercedes-Benz Vans chief Marcus Breitschwerdt “was not available for comment” at the show, while three other “senior” commercial vehicle executives refused to talk to the publication about the X-Class.
The report said only Andrea Eberhardt, head of product and corporate communications for Mercedes-Benz Vans, was prepared to make a statement.
“We currently have an X-Class in market and we are, of course, interested in finding as many customers as possible and that’s all we can say,” she told the Australian publication.
In August 2019, Breitschwerdt admitted the X-Class bakkie was a “niche product” that hadn’t delivered the volumes the German automaker was expecting.
The comment came after rumours emerged in July 2019 suggesting the Stuttgart-based firm would axe the bakkie – which is, of course, based on the Nissan Navara – as part of its efforts to “reduce costs amid profit warnings”.
