The design chief at Mercedes-Benz has revealed that the X-Class concepts revealed last month are “pretty much” production-ready.
Gorden Wagener, head of design for Mercedes-Benz and Daimler AG, made the comments when speaking to motoring.com.au.
“The overall design, proportions … this is pretty much production,” Wagener said.
“We put on bigger tyres and stuff and little details like the winch and some jewellery for the show car, but pretty much it’s what you’ll get,” he added.
The Australian publication went on to suggest that the upcoming production version of the Nissan Navara-based bakkie – which will likely arrive in South Africa early in 2018 – will be inspired by the so-called “stylish explorer” concept (pictured above) rather than the more rugged “powerful adventurer” version.
Wagener furthermore confirmed that the cabin of this first concept is also virtually production-ready.
“The interior is almost complete production. You’ve never seen a pickup with this kind of value and quality inside. We basically treat it like our passenger cars. It’s above everything in the competition, aiming to deliver ambience far above everything else out there,” he said.
