Modern Citi Golf, anyone? VW Golf rendered with retro styling cues…

Well, that’s interesting. A digital artist has rendered the Volkswagen Golf with retro styling cues, clearly drawing design inspiration from the Mk1 (and thus Citi Golf) and Mk2 models.

Created by Nikita Chuyko and published on kolesa.ru, the renders show what the next (eighth-generation) Golf would look like with decidedly retro styling cues.

Chuyko says he paid particular attention to the first two generations of Wolfsburg’s ubiquitous hatchback when creating the images, handing the Golf an old-school grille with horizontal slats as well as round headlamps.

Round back, he positioned the blocky taillamps high on the body and moved the numberplate to right below the rear screen, just like the Mk2.

Of course, the upcoming Golf 8 will not look anything like this, with VW’s designers instead (based on spy shots, anyway) taking an evolutionary approach to the newcomer’s styling, carrying much over from the seventh generation. Expect the new model to officially break cover in October.

Back in January 2019, a report out of Germany suggested VW was developing a new “Golf Light”, with the accompanying rendering also incorporating Mk1 styling elements. The news seemed exciting for South Africans who fell in love with the Citi Golf produced at Uitenhage from 1984 until 2009, although we’ve not heard anything else on the topic since…
