Sold in Paris last week, a Ferrari has again stole the auction show by being labelled as the “most expensive car ever sold at auction”. It seems there are those who believe that owing to the weaker currencies, the previous record of a 250 GTO still stands, but nevertheless, what an amount!
At their Motorcars Retromobile event, auction house Artcurial started the bidding at just over $22 million, and bidding continued for over 10 minutes, before the final bid was made. The total amount, including the buyer’s premium, came to $35,711,359.
As expected, this cars has a rich racing history, after all, when Enzo Ferrari started producing cars, his main focus was on building race cars and not road cars. This car competed in the Sebring 12 Hours in 1957 where it finished sixth. It also participated in the the Mille Miglia, and became the first car to achieve an average lap speed of more than 200 km/h at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
If that is not enough kudos next to its name, Sir Stirling Moss drove the car to victory at the Cuba Grand Prix in 1958.
