NATIS Online Booking Licence Services

By: Nelson Kalula
NATIS online booking allows you to book any eNATIS (online.natis.gov.za) service without leaving your house. Following the COVID-19 outbreak lockdown period in March 2020, many Driving Licence Testing Centers were closed for the remainder of last year and the first half of this year. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) now has a backlog of applications for driving licence tests. With this backlog and the need for health and safety precautions, South Africans should book a slot online. Members of the public can “download forms for most vehicle and driving licence transactions, access the address and contact details of your nearest service centre, find answers to frequently asked questions, participate in forums (registration required), download statistics, and read the latest news on system enhancements and performance” through the National Traffic Information Systems (NATIS) department. Your NaTIS certificate is also known as your vehicle registration certificate.

The NATIS online booking system is a portal from the National Traffic Information System (NATIS) that offers motorists the following services:

  • Schedule a learners licence test,
  • Apply for a professional driver’s licence.
  • Schedule a driver’s licence test,
  • Renew a driver’s licence that has expired,
  • Check the status of their licences and renew their driver’s licences.

To use the natis online services portal, you must first ensure that you meet all the application requirements. These requirements may vary based on your specific use case. Still, they typically include a valid ID, your contact information, and any necessary documentation or proof that is relevant to your particular situation.

Booking your Learners Licence Exam

To be able to drive a motor vehicle in South Africa, you must first obtain your learner’s licence. In order to do so, you will need to make a learner’s licence booking with your local driving school or government agency. In order to qualify for a learner’s licence, you must demonstrate that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to operate a motor vehicle safely on the road. This can usually be done by obtaining either an API or CBR certificate from NAPOLI, the National Institute for Industrial Safety.

Additionally, learners are prohibited from having passengers aside from other learners in the vehicle while practising their driving skills. To maintain their learner’s permit, learners must demonstrate that they have mastered all aspects of safe driving and stay up-to-date on any new regulations and laws governing vehicle operation in South Africa. Overall, possessing a learner’s licence is an important step towards becoming a competent and responsible driver on our roads.

Additional NATIS Online Services

On the website, you can also check the status of your licences and apply for a professional driver’s permit (PrDP). When you register for a NATIS online account, you’ll receive notifications when your licences are about to expire.

A permit is required by law for professional drivers. Drivers of minibus taxis, buses, breakdown vehicles, lorries and trailers with a GMV above 3,500 kg, and motor vehicles with a fuel tank are considered professional drivers.

Visit the NATIS online website, log in with your login information, and choose your province to apply. To begin, select the “Book Now for PrDP Application” tab and then adhere to the on-screen instructions. Give the DLTC you want to reserve a slot at, along with your contact information, personal information, and information from your driver’s licence. Verify the reservation’s success.

Driver’s Licence Codes

You must understand how to operate a vehicle, how to navigate the roads, what the road rules are, and how to read road signs to drive a car in the Republic of South Africa. Before granting you a permit to drive, RTMC makes sure you abide by these rules. Motor vehicles are divided into various categories for this reason. Your driver’s licence indicates the type of vehicles you are permitted to drive on rural roads. The courses include:

Code A1

This code applies to single-cylinder, sidecar-equipped motorcycles with 125cc or fewer engines. To be eligible for a driver’s licence that allows you to operate a certain category of vehicles, you must be at least 16 years old.

Code A

Code A applies to single-cylinder motorcycles and motorcycles with sidecars that have 125cc or larger engines. To be eligible for a driver’s licence that authorises you to operate this category of vehicles, you must be at least 18 years old.

Code B

Any motor vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GMV) of 3,500 kg or less falls under code B. It might be a truck, bus, or car. To be eligible for a driver’s licence that allows you to operate a certain category of vehicles, you must be at least 18 years old.

Code C1

Any motor vehicle with a GMV between 3,500 kg and 16,000 kg falls under this code. To be eligible for a driver’s licence that allows you to operate a certain category of vehicles, you must be at least 18 years old.

Code C

This code applies to automobiles with a GMV greater than 16,000 kg. To be eligible for a driver’s licence that allows you to operate a certain category of vehicles, you must be at least 18 years old.

Code EB

This code is applicable to two categories of moving vehicles:

  • A light motor vehicle towing a trailer is the first. Gross combination mass for the two should be 3,500 kg or less.
  • The second involves combining a motor vehicle with a tare weight of 3,500 kg or less (weight without people, cargo, or fuel) with another motor vehicle that has a GMV weight of 3,500 kg or less.

To be eligible for a driver’s licence that allows you to operate a certain category of vehicles, you must be at least 18 years old.

Code EC1

The following two categories of moving vehicles also use this code:

  • A heavy motor vehicle that is articulated and weighs between 3,500 kg and 16,000 kg and tows one or more trailers.
  • A pair of vehicles with a combined tare between 3,500 and 16,500 kilogrammes and a GMV between 3,500 and 16,000 kilogrammes.

To be eligible for a driver’s licence that allows you to operate a certain category of vehicles, you must be at least 18 years old.

Code EC

The final code, EC, is for two different kinds of moving vehicles:

  • A vehicle with an articulated axle weighing at least 16,001 kg and
  • A pair of motor vehicles combined that weigh at least 16,001 kg.

To be eligible for a driver’s licence that allows you to operate a certain category of vehicles, you must be at least 18 years old.

Codes for Leaner Licences

You can learn to drive with a learner’s permit. While you have this licence, you can drive with a licenced driver’s supervision. The codes for a learner’s permit come from a driver’s permit because it is the first step toward obtaining a driving licence. Before choosing the learner’s licence code, you should be aware of what you will be driving.

Code 1
Code 1 meets the same requirements as codes A and A1 for driver’s licences. You will learn how to operate a motor vehicle in those categories under Code 1.

Code 2

Code 2 meets the same requirements as codes B and EB for driver’s licences. You will learn how to operate a motor vehicle in those categories under Code 2.

Code 3

Code 3 meets the same requirements as codes C1, C, EC1, and EC in the driver’s licence classifications. You will learn how to operate a motor vehicle in those categories under Code 3.
