The new-generation BMW 4 Series family is now complete with the reveal of the five-door Gran Coupe version, which is set to touch down in Mzansi around the fourth quarter of 2021.
The dimensions of the new 4 Series Gran Coupe have grown in every direction, with the new model having gained 143 mm in length, 27 mm in width and 53 mm in height. For what it’s worth, the Gran Coupe is 74 mm longer and 25 mm wider than the BMW 3 Series while the height remains unchanged. Boot space grows by 39 litres to total 470 litres.
The 4 Series Gran Coupe appears to share the majority of its exterior sheet metal with the battery-powered BMW i4 that was revealed recently, including the controversial giant vertical grille that is a fixture on all 4 Series models.
BMW South Africa says that the local line-up and specifications will be released closer to launch, but the international engine range includes all the usual suspects, including a range-topping M440i xDrive all-wheel drive model powered by a 3,0-litre straight-six turbopetrol that produces 275 kW and 500 N.m.
BMW also mentions a pair of 2-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrols in the form of a 420i with 135 kW and 300 N.m, and a 430i that’s good for 180 kW and 400 N.m. The only diesel option is a 420d that’s credited with 140 kW and 400 N.m.
All engines are paired with the familiar eight-speed autobox and the 4 Series Gran Coupe also enjoys model-specific chassis tuning.
When it comes to interior tech, the Gran Coupe sticks to the usual 4 Series script and it’s interesting to note that it hasn’t inherited the new wide-screen BMW Operating System 8, opting instead for the current seventh-generation set-up that’s fitted to most BMW models. The system can be controlled via touch, rotary controller, voice or gesture and the BMW Personal Assistant is also part of the deal here, as is remote software upgrades.
