20 years ago Universal Pictures introduced the first Fast and the Furious movie and since then the action-packed series has spawned eight films, with the ninth-instalment awaiting imminent release. The trailer, released last year, has amassed over 50-million YouTube views.
The latest film, F9: The Fast Saga, features the main ingredients of any Fast Saga: street-racing, spying and heisting and features series veterans Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges.
Director Justin Lin returns to take charge of F9. His previous work in the franchise includes Tokyo Drift and three films proceeding it.
Behind the drivers seat and crazy stunts, the series has enjoyed huge success around the world, totalling close to $6-billion in gross revenue. An important aspect of the films is its broad representation of females. The 2001 film saw Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez feature alongside Paul Walker and Vin Diesel.
Fast forward (see what we did there?), and notable performances from the likes of South African-born actress Charlize Theron and Academy Award winner Helen Mirren elevated the franchises appeal even further.
F9 features, Rodriguez, Brewster, Theron, Mirren with Nathalie Emmanuel and singer Cardi B whose addition can be linked to making the movie appeal to a Gen-z audience. Universal Pictures released a trailer featuring interviews with the Fast women and Rodriguez says the franchise “sheds light on the female voice in action movies”.
“Fast and Furious women get to show the world what they can do”, says Emmanuel. Universal Pictures confirmed that two more films will be produced before the ‘Fast Saga’ concludes.
