The new GTI is powered by a 2,0-litre turbocharged, direct injection four-cylinder engine of the EA888 series, and features a new cylinder head design. It delivers 162 kW over a wide range from 4 500 to 6 200 r/min and 350 N.m of torque from 1 500 to 4 400 r/min. I drove a test unit equipped with the marque’s six-speed DSG transmission, and for this model VW claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6,4 seconds and a 244 km/h top speed. The cheaper six-speed manual model is 0,1 seconds slower to 100 km/h but has a higher top speed (246 km/h).
A Performance Edition model, featuring a power hike up to 169 kW and a limited-slip differential, will reportedly join the line-up at a later date.
