Haval turned some heads back in April with the South African launch of the keenly-priced Jolion, and barely a month later it’s being followed up by an all-new Haval H6.
Looking significantly more modern than its predecessor and built on the company’s new global modular platform, the new Haval H6 will have a starting price of R419 900 in South Africa, which puts it below its natural rivals such as the Toyota Rav4 (from R472 900), Mazda CX-5 (from R455 500) and Nissan X-Trail (from R462 000).
But not only does it undercut these vehicles, it’s also bigger and more powerful. The H6’s overall length of 4 653 mm puts it comfortably ahead of the Rav4 (4 600), X-Trail (4 640) and CX-5 (4 550).
Haval has yet to reveal the full model range and specification levels, but it has mentioned that the H6 will be powered by a 2-litre engine. As shown on overseas websites, this takes the form of a turbocharged petrol engine that develops 150 kW and 320 N.m. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmission and buyers have a choice between front-wheel drive and permanent all-wheel drive models.
The H6 has also been significantly modernised inside, where we see a small tablet-like digital instrument cluster and large central touchscreen – offered in 10,25 inch and 12,3 inch sizes depending on the model.
Haval, which recently celebrated its fourth anniversary in South Africa, has made some impressive gains on the sales charts. The company sold 1 782 units in May 2021, making it the seventh biggest carmaker overall. The Jolion accounted for 701 of last month’s sales.
As mentioned, the Jolion recently went on sale as the company’s new compact SUV offering, and with prices ranging from R299 900 and R398 900 it slots very neatly beneath the upcoming H6.
Haval says the H6 launch is “imminent” so watch this space for the full pricing and specifications.
