The new M40d variants have finally joined BMW South Africa’s X3 and X4 ranges, slotting in alongside their M40i siblings at summit of the respective line-ups (until the local arrival of the X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition flagships, that it).

Both models employ the Munich-based firm’s 3,0-litre inline-six turbodiesel engine, sending 240 kW and 680 N.m to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The sprint from standstill to three figures takes a claimed 4,9 seconds, regardless of which body style you opt for, with top speed electronically pegged at 250 km/h.

So, how much are you looking at for these oil-burning performance SUVs? Well, the X3 M40d is priced from R1 034 964 (that’s R3 415 less than the X3 M40i), while the X4 M40d starts at R1 140 264 (also R3 415 less than the X4 M40i).

These M Performance derivatives come equipped as standard with 20-inch light-alloy wheels, M Sport brakes and an M Sport differential.
