McLaren has confirmed its new Artura plug-in hybrid supercar will be sold in South Africa with a six-year battery warranty.

Here in South Africa, the purchase price (which has yet to be announced) will include a five-year/75 000 km warranty, a six-year/75 000 km battery warranty and 10-year/unlimited kilometre “anti-perforation” body warranty.

In addition, local Artura owners will benefit from a three-year service plan, which McLaren says will cover the cost of “all regular maintenance undertaken” in the 12-month/15 000 km service intervals. The latter includes essential oil and filter changes, renewing engine and e-motor air filters, brake-fluid replenishment and “full safety inspections”.

Revealed in February 2021, the new Artura is McLaren’s first series-production high-performance hybrid supercar and is underpinned by a fresh carbon lightweight architecture.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain is built around a twin-turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 petrol engine with 430 kW and 585 N.m of torque. The Woking-based company says the M630 engine features a 120° V-angle and spins to 8 500 r/min. The Artura also features a compact axial flux e-motor, located within the transmission bell housing and capable of generating an additional 70 kW and 225 N.m.

The Artura’s peak system outputs are thus listed as 500 kW and 720 N.m, which facilitate a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,0 seconds. McLaren says its new hybrid supercar will hit 200 km/h from zero in 8,3 seconds, while blasting from standstill to 300km/h will take a claimed 21,5 seconds. Top speed, meanwhile, is limited to 330 km/h. Braking performance comes from carbon-ceramic brakes with lightweight aluminium callipers.

The electric motor is powered by a battery pack comprising five lithium-ion modules, offering a usable energy capacity of 7,4 kWh and a claimed pure electric range of 30 km. McLaren says the Artura boasts a dry weight of 1 395 kg, with the total weight of the hybrid components listed as 130 kg (which includes the 88 kg battery pack and 15,4 kg electric motor).
