Set to join the German marque’s battery-electric portfolio in 2027, BMW has whipped the wraps off the iX3’s in-vogue sibling. Meet the iX4…

The iX4’s length and width match the iX3’s, at 4 785 and 1 895 mm, respectively. The wheelbase remains unchanged, at 2 879 mm. The iX4’s in-vogue roofline is lower than the iX3’s, at 1 595 vs 1 633 mm. BMW claims a boot capacity of 490 litres, which expands to 1 600 litres for utility purposes when folding down the rear seatbacks. For comparison, the iX3’s boot swallows a claimed 520 litres, with 1 750 litres of packing space available behind the front seats.
At launch, the iX4 will be available in two flavours: 40 xDrive and 50 xDrive. An M60 xDrive derivative will be introduced to the range “shortly afterwards”, BMW says.
The 40 xDrive’s dual electric-motor arrangement produces combined power and torque outputs of 275 kW and 520 N.m — good for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5.6 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h. The 40 xDrive’s 82.6 kWh (net) lithium-ion battery serves up a claimed operating range of 526-638 km. BMW claims an average energy consumption of 19.1-15.9 kWh/100 km.
The 50 xDrive’s front and rear electric motors produce 123 kW/255 N.m and 240 kW/435 N.m, respectively. Delivered to all four corners via a single-speed transmission, the system’s combined outputs of 345 kW and 645 N.m allow for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.9 seconds and 210 km/h top speed. The 50 xDrive’s 108.7 kWh (net) lithium-ion battery offers a claimed operating range of 680-828 km. For comparison, the iX3 50 xDrive serves up 679-805 km (claimed). The Bavarian brand claims an average energy consumption of 19-15.7 kWh/100 km.
Set to spearhead the iX4 lineup, the M60 xDrive produces 450 kW and 875 N.m. The M Performance model dispatches the 0-100 km/h dash in a claimed 3.9 seconds, before topping out at an electronically governed 240 km/h. The company claims an operating range of up to 777 km.
BMW South Africa has yet to confirm whether the iX4 will join the iX3 in its local battery-electric portfolio.
